Vintage Pens: 2770: Sheaffer: Sentinel Deluxe
In 1949, Sheaffer introduced the world to TouchDowns, a revolutionary new system of pneumatic filler. They only ran their initial wide-bodied design for one year. This is one of those original 1949 Sheaffer Sentinel Deluxe pens. We restored the pen with a new ink sac and O-ring. We also wet sanded this pen's barrel and blind cap to a glossy shine. Unfortunately, you'll see a series of small pits in the barrel. We don't know what caused them, but they don't go all the way through the barrel. The restored filler works great. The original two-tone 14k gold nib writes a nice fine line. It is a firm nib, but it seems to have a little line variation to medium, depending on your hand angle and style. The polished stainless steel cap shows moderate wear with little dents in the top, and the off-center clip has 80% brassing that we've polished. There is some brassing in the cap band, too. This was somebody's well-loved work horse. It is ready for many more years of service. 13.2cm capped.

We've never spent this much time before polishing a $50 pen, but we knew that under all the heavy wear lay a beautiful Prussian blue that could be restored to a glassy finish. It probably took 2 hours of wet sanding, but it was worth it. There are still a few faded deep scratches and reduced bite marks, but those won't be easily noticed for the casual observer. We also restored this pen with a new ink sac and O-ring. The TouchDown filler works great. One last quirk is that it is an American made cap and barrel with a Canadian Sheaffer 14k gold nib that writes a nice medium line. 13cm capped.

Vintage Pens: 1248: Sheaffer: TM-Triumph
All engravings aside, this rare Sheaffer Touchdown TM Triumph has been one of our favorite finds of late. It looks like it did when it left the store more than 60 years ago. We replaced the ink sac and O-ring. The clip is on tight. There is no wear on the gold-filled pen. It is engraved on the barrel with the name of "Louis Schaaf." The cap is engraved "10 Years / Tension Env Corp". The two-tone conical Triumph nib is 14k gold and writes a firm fine line. Click the headline font to see a close up. A small patch of gold shines through the palladium plate on the bottom tine of the photo. 13.5cm capped.
