Sheaffer

William A. Sheaffer founded the Sheaffer Pen Company in 1912. His invention of the lever-filling fountain pen that year revolutionized how fountain pens were filled, and by the 1920s Sheaffer became one of the world's most dominant pen companies. Always innovating filling systems, Sheaffer also created a Vacuum-Fil pen, pneumatic TouchDown filler and pneumatic Snorkel filler that made for the first truly mess-free bottled-ink filling system. Started in Fort Madison, Iowa, the Sheaffer Pen Company today is owned by India's William Penn Company.

Vintage Pens: 6151 Sheaffer Craftsman
Filling Mechanism: TouchDown
Era: 1940-1949   Fountain Pen Nib Size: F
Price: $59.99
Vintage Pens: 6151: Sheaffer: Craftsman
The late 1940s brought the invention of the Sheaffer TouchDown filler. This pen used pneumatics to fill a standard ink sac using a series of metal tubes and an O-ring seal in the tail of the pen. We love these simple filling systems. We think this pen is called a Sheaffer Craftsman, but we aren't sure. We restored it with a new ink sac and O-ring. Its gold-plated trim shows some brassing, but it isn't hideous. The read of the blue pen shows wear from use but no cracks or serious blemishes. You will write a firm, fine line with its two-tone 14k gold nib. It has a small hint of feedback. Click the headline for close-ups. 13cm capped.
Vintage Pens: 6081 Sheaffer Statesman
Filling Mechanism: Snorkel
Era: 1950-1959   Fountain Pen Nib Size: XF
Price: $125.00
Vintage Pens: 6081: Sheaffer: Statesman
Our favorite Rube Goldberg filling system in vintage pens has to be the Sheaffer Snorkel. Over-elaborate...but also great for sucking the last drops of ink out of a bottle. We restored this Sheaffer Statesman set with a new O-ring, ink sac and point seal. Cosmetically, it is in very good shape with only light surface wear. You will write a firm extra-fine to fine line with a little feedback. All of that is pretty standard for these conical "Triumph" nibs made of "palladium silver." The pencil remains in great working order and is cosmetically also near excellent with only light surface wear. The vintage pencil comes with a few .9mm leads and the hardened remains of the original blue eraser. Box included.
Vintage Pens: 6135 Sheaffer Student Pen
Filling Mechanism: TouchDown
Era: 1960-1979   Fountain Pen Nib Size: M
Price: $39.99
Vintage Pens: 6135: Sheaffer: Student Pen
We think this was an early version of the Sheaffer Student Pens that would be better known as cartridge fillers in the 1960s-'80s. This one sports a TouchDown filler that was first introduced in 1949. We restored this 1960s' pen with a new ink sac and O-ring. You will write a medium line with its slightly scratchy steel nib. Click the headline for close-ups. Overall, the pen is in decent cosmetic condition. Only the top of the nib looks scratched up. 13cm capped.

Vintage Pens: 6134: Sheaffer: TouchDown
The late 1940s brought a new ink-filling system to Sheaffer. It was the TouchDown filler. This ingenious system used pneumatics to help fill an conventional ink sac. We restored this vintage pen with a new ink sac and O-ring. You can see the pen is in pretty good shape, with a crisp imprint. The cap is steel and sports several obvious dents. You will write a dreamy, smooth fine line with its two-tone 14k gold Triumph nib. 13.3cm capped.

Know why this pen looks so beat up? Click the headline for a close-up and clue. This was the hard working, everyday-reliable pen of a secretary or journalist. How do we know? See that funny mark that looks like a Japanese symbol on the section? This pen was custom made for devotees of the Gregg Shorthand writing method. We restored this vintage pen with a new ink sac and O-ring. The TouchDown filler is fun and easy to use. If you're Sheaffer TouchDown or vintage pen curious, you can't beat the price on this pen. You will write an extra-fine line with its two-tone 14k gold nib. It has a little feedback, but it feels good and responsive to the paper beneath the tip of the pen. 13.5cm capped.
Vintage Pens: 6038 Sheaffer Canadian TouchDown
Filling Mechanism: TouchDown
Era: 1940-1949   Fountain Pen Nib Size: XF
Price: $99.99
Vintage Pens: 6038: Sheaffer: Canadian TouchDown
Sheaffer USA only made these chocolate-brown Sheaffer TouchDown-filling fountain pens with wide barrels in 1949. For now, we are going to assume the same of Sheaffer Canada, where this lovely vintage pen was made. We were surprised to find that this pen had been restored shortly before we got it. The sac is still very pliable, and the O-ring seal is strong and well lubricated. You will write an extra-fine line with its two-tone 14k gold nib. If you can write without pressure, there is almost no feedback. Standard writing pressure nets a little feedback. Click the headline for photos. 13.3cm capped.
Vintage Pens: 5993 Sheaffer Admiral
Filling Mechanism: Snorkel
Era: 1950-1959   Fountain Pen Nib Size: M
Price: $175.00
Vintage Pens: 5993: Sheaffer: Admiral
New Old Stock Sheaffer Snorkel fountain pens are a rare treat. This Sheaffer Admiral is actually our favorite kind of snorkel. We prefer the open 14k gold nibs as smoother, more responsive nibs than the firmer conical Triumph nibs. We replaced the pen's O-ring, but the point seal and sac performed as good as new with water. There might be a little shop wear on this pen, but there are no significant blemishes. Click the headline for close-ups. 14.2cm capped.
Vintage Pens: 6028 Sheaffer Imperial II
Filling Mechanism: TouchDown
Era: 1960-1979   Fountain Pen Nib Size: M
Price: $49.99
Vintage Pens: 6028: Sheaffer: Imperial II
Our parade of Sheaffer Imperial II fountain pens continues with this vintage pen. Click the headline for close-ups. It is a nice grey model, but you can see a scar on its section. You'll also see the top of its nib tipping area is a bit chewed up. You will find the nib writes a smooth medium line at a low angle of attack. However, the more vertically you hold the pen, the finer and scratchier the nib gets. We restored the pen with a new ink sac and O-ring. 13.6cm capped.
